Bi-campeonato Mundial.

Brazil 2000: A samba lesson for the world

A first-time affair:

The FIFA Club World Championship in Brazil was the first international footballing event of the new millennium. With a mind-boggling array of top-tier talent on display, the brave, new move towards a more globalised club football community made for quite a showcase indeed. Eight club sides representing every corner of Planet Football converged on Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to bask under the warm South American sun in the nation considered by most to be the true heart and soul of the beautiful game. Among the star-studded list of combatants were FIFA Club of the Century, Real Madrid, from Spain’s prestigious La Liga, and recently-crowned European champions Manchester United of England’s Premier League. The 1999/2000 treble-winning side even forewent the opportunity to defend the FA Cup in order to battle it out with the world’s finest clubs in the land of carnival and samba.

Champions:

It was the two Brazilian participants, Rio’s Vasco da Gama and Corinthians of Sao Paulo that met under the scorching South American sun in a star-studded local Final. The Sao Paulo side just managed to pip their rivals 4-3 in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes of tactical, goalless football. After drawing with Real Madrid and disposing of Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr and Morocco’s Raja Casablanca in the first round, Corinthians and their stable of thoroughbreds – Vampeta, Freddy, Rincon, Edu, Dida and the incomparable Edilson – ran out worthy champions in front of a crowd of 73,000 in Rio’s fabled Maracana Stadium.

Surprises:

A final without at least one of Europe’s top teams was surely the single-most surprising act at the FIFA Club World Championship stage. Spanish giants Real eventually finished a disappointing fourth after losing out to Necaxa of Mexico in the 3rd/4th-place play-off match. The Spaniards had missed out on the Final only on goal difference as they finished level on points in their group with eventual champions Corinthians. Manchester United’s 1-3 loss to Vasco da Gama saw the pre-tournament favourites go home early, victimised by Romario and Edmundo – the latter scoring, without doubt, the goal of the competition.

Mexican representatives Necaxa kicked up quite a stir as they sauntered into the third-place match against Real Madrid and put up a ferocious fight to the final whistle. Led by the attacking exploits of Ecuadorian sensation Agustin Delgado, the stylish Mexico City side slipped past the European aristocrats on penalties, returned home with heads held high.

Player of the Tournament:

Corinthians’ striker Edilson collected the adidas Golden Ball as the most valuable player of the competition. His two goals and one assist were only a partial indication of this sublime player’s superlative and multi-dimensional talents. With Edilson leading the Corinthians charge, South America had the last word in the heated debate over which continent truly wears world football’s crown.

O gol quase saiu.

Jorge Henrique monitorou o lado direito defensivo.

Cássio continuava fechando o gol no começo segundo tempo.

O gol deixou o time corintiano mais leve. As trocas de passe aumentaram. O Corinthians tratou de segurar o jogo.

No lance final, Torres marcou, mas a arbitragem assinalou impedimento.

Chelsea distraught after losing to Corinthians in Club World Cup final

• Paolo Guerrero scores winner in 1-0 victory for Brazilians
• Gary Cahill sent off for Chelsea in injury time

Chelsea‘s trek to the other side of the world has ended in numbed disappointment and livid frustration. Corinthians reclaimed the Fifa Club World Cup for South America at the Londoners’ expense here, wresting the trophy from Europe for the first time in six years, with this arena pounding to the beat of the Brazilian drums. It was as if São Paulo had upped sticks to Shin Yokohama for the night, with Rafael Benítez and his players left defeated and deflated as the din pursued them from the turf.

Their number had been reduced to 10 by the end, Gary Cahill dismissed in stoppage time for an off-the-ball incident with Emerson and departing the pitch perplexed. Fernando Torres had an equaliser denied in the seconds that still remained, an offside flag choking his celebrations, but it was his inability to beat the outstanding Cassio moments earlier that had actually proved decisive. The goalkeeper had blocked the Spaniard’s clearest sight of goal with his legs and with that chance went all hope of extra time. There was to be no Didier Drogba to bail the Premier League club out this time.

Defeat will hurt. Ramires, exhausted and distraught as he slumped to the turf, had to be consoled by team-mates and coaching staff. David Luiz, in floods of tears, sat alone and hardly able to watch his compatriots mass together to lift the trophy. Those images rather summed up the mood in the aftermath as the vast numbers of Corinthians fans crammed into this arena erupted in joy, leaving Benítez with work to be done as to how he lifts this squad ahead of Wednesday’s Capital One Cup quarter-final at Leeds. The squad have another tenpin bowling trip planned for midnight as they seek to deflect the jet lag, though that will be a sombre gathering.

The only goal had been registered by the Peruvian Paolo Guerrero – a former Bayern Munich player, adding to the irony as a tense encounter edged into its final quarter. In truth it had been an intriguing rather than swashbuckling contest for long periods, the teams probing cautiously before Chelsea injected some urgency and Corinthians found their rhythm on the counter.

The Premier League team might have felt disheartened not to have led early on when Juan Mata’s early corner was met by Cahill, his header striking Chicao as he retreated towards the goalline with the England international then prodding the rebound goalwards. Cassio was falling backwards in the confusion and grateful the attempt juddered into him rather than beyond him, the goalkeeper ending up tumbling back to sit on the ball.

There was another close-range grab from Torres, and a full-length dive and finger-tip save to deny Victor Moses’ curled attempt as half-time approached that was more impressive, particularly as he had been unsighted by Alessandro in the buildup. Mata’s volley moments later created the impression that Chelsea had retired at the interval a team on the up, the momentum apparently theirs, though Corinthians had largely been content enough to soak up such pressure. Their own threat was sprung on the break, the pace of Guerrero and Emerson discomforting their opponents’ back line.

Luiz, up against the club he had supported as a boy, had done well to crowd out Emerson on one barnstorming breakaway. The Brazilian’s centre-half partner, Cahill, struggled with the forwards’ more slippery darts and Emerson should have done better than to slice high and wide in the aftermath of one error. Paulinho, a player coveted by Chelsea and a host of European clubs, was a muscular presence in midfield granted licence to maraud by Ralf’s deeper-lying brief, the former fizzing a shot towards goal in the second half as the pace picked up and the noise generated by the Brazilian support boomed round the arena.

As it was, their monotonous chorus was only interrupted in celebration. The Brazilians’ lead, when it was chiselled out, was neatly created even if Chelsea will have cursed the sudden pang of sloppiness. Corinthians broke at pace down their right side, Jorge Henrique nodding down and Paulinho veering across the area with his heavy touch serving to supply Danilo sprinting into the penalty area. The winger, who had played for São Paulo against Benítez’s Liverpool back in 2005, cut inside and saw his shot loop up invitingly from Cahill’s block. Luiz and Ashley Cole were on the goalline, and Ramires close, but no Chelsea player reacted quickly enough to prevent Guerrero heading the loose ball in off the underside of the bar.

Torres’ close-range attempt aside, a chance stemming from a César Azpilicueta throw in, Chelsea rather ran aground thereafter, their energy sapped as if the 6,000 mile journey had finally caught up with them. Cahill’s dismissal, Emerson rolling around on the centre spot in apparent agony claiming an elbow had been flung, took the last of their conviction from them. The centre-half was consoled by Benítez as he trudged down the tunnel. The interim first-team manager must try and revive his troops in the hours ahead. This has ended as a damaging experience.

Corinthians celebrate winning the Club World Cup
By Michael EmonsBBC Sport

Rafael Benitez failed to win his first trophy as Chelsea manager as his team lost against Brazilian side Corinthians in the Club World Cup final in Japan.

Paolo Guerrero scored the only goal on 69 minutes when he reacted quickest to head home past three Blues players.

Fernando Torres had a chance to force extra time but fired straight at Cassio with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Analysis

“I don’t think you can argue with that. It meant more to Corinthians.

“Chelsea were quite disappointing. They did not really go for it but they had their chances. It was no surprise that there was just one goal as it was not a great game. For all three defenders to stay on the line was a mistake.

“If you are Fernando Torres and have waited all game for a chance, you have to score. Frank Lampard was Chelsea’s best player.”

Chelsea’s Gary Cahill, who also missed a good opportunity, was sent off after clashing with Emerson late in the game.

Torres had the ball in the net in injury time when he headed in but his effort was ruled out for offside as Corinthians held on to win the trophy.

Chelsea should have taken an early lead when a Juan Mata corner fell to Cahill and his header was blocked by Chicao, but the ball rebounded to the centre-half, whose shot was saved on the line.

Corinthians, backed by 30,000 fans who had travelled to Yokohama, then had a good chance when Mata gifted the ball to Emerson.

The Brazilian side had two attackers against two defenders but David Luiz, who returned to the back four after impressing in midfield in the 3-1 semi-final win against Mexican side Monterrey, showed his defensive qualities by ushering the midfielder out of play.

The South American side, who won the Copa Libertadores in July, created their best chance of the first half when Guerrero shot across goal and the ball reached Emerson, whose shot from a narrow angle hit the outside of the post.

But, with Corinthians defending high up the pitch, Chelsea began to create more chances.

Luiz, a boyhood Corinthians fan, wasted a free-kick in a good position after Eden Hazard had been fouled by Chicao.

A wonderful piece of creativity from Hazard, who chipped a perfect pass to cut out left-back Fabio Santos, gave Victor Moses a chance but the winger’s heavy first touch enabled central defender Paulo Andre to clear.

Frank Lampard, who was making his first Chelsea start since suffering a calf injury in a Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on 23 October, played another intelligent pass, which Torres controlled on his knee before having his shot saved by Cassio.

The Corinthians goalkeeper then tipped wide a curling effort from Moses and also denied Mata as Chelsea pushed to become only the second English team to win the competition after Manchester United’s success in 2008.

But Corinthians went ahead midway through the second half when Paulinho, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City, collected a pass and ran into the penalty area.

Corinthians v ChelseaPaolo Guerrero heads in the winning goal

The chance appeared to have gone as he lost control but the ball fell to Danilo who cut inside and his shot looped up off Gary Cahill and, despite Chelsea having three defenders on the line, Guerrero reacted quickest to nod home from five yards.

Chelsea, who were eliminated from the Champions League earlier this month, brought on Oscar and Cesar Azpilicueta for Moses and Branislav Ivanovic as the Blues pushed for an equaliser.

Torres had a glorious chance to equalise when he only had Cassio to beat but could not take the opportunity.

The Blues ended the game with 10 men after Cahill clashed with Emerson, although the English side thought they had forced extra time when Torres headed in but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Chelsea had one final shot, Mata hitting the base of the post but Corinthians, who won the trophy in 2000, became the first South American team to win the competition twice.

:

Paolo Guerrero scored his second goal of Japan 2012 to earn Corinthians a 1-0 win over English Premier League side Chelsea and a second world club crown. The game in the International Stadium Yokohama was a tense and intriguing affair, and in the end the Brazilians’ guile and grit won the day.

Corinthians immediately settled into their trademark defensive swarm, pressuring Chelsea all over the pitch early on. The men from London did their level best to set down a passing rhythm and take control of possession, but it was no easy task as Tite’s men contested every ball and closed down space with a work ethic that was well appreciated by throngs of Brazilian fans, who turned the stadium into a bouncing cauldron of black and white.

Chelsea’s first corner of the game nearly resulted in an opening goal in the 11th minute. Gary Cahill, up from the centre of defence, headed well, only for Cassio to block the shot and then gobble up the rebound before the defender could follow up and crash it over the line.

The side from Sao Paulo had to be content with shots from long range for most of the first half, which generally failed to trouble Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

At the other end, Eden Hazard, with his quick turns and overall panache, looked a likely source to break down Corinthians’ defensive wall, and he earned a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area after 21 minutes. David Luiz, back in defence after a stint in midfield in the semi-final win over Monterrey, hit poorly and low into the wall.

With ten minutes to go in the half, Corinthians, who looked consistently dangerous on the counter-attack, had their best chance of the period. Guerrero battled into the box, scuffing a shot across the face of goal. Emerson was alert to the opportunity, but he could only hit the outside of the post with the hulking Branislav Ivanovic in the way.

Shortly after, Victor Moses – on for Oscar in his first start of the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup – cut inside from the left and curled a dangerous shot toward the top corner. He was denied a goal only by the sheer athleticism of the diving Cassio, who was at work again seconds later to deny Frank Lampard and keep the scores even at the interval.

The second half picked up right where the first left off: physically robust and full of rough-and-tumble battles all over the pitch. The first chance came nine minutes in, Juan Mata sending Hazard away with a fabulous through ball. Cassio, again, was alert to the danger, racing off his line to cut down the angle and save from the Belgian.

Corinthians took full advantage and found their breakthrough after 69 minutes.  Danilo dribbled across the face of goal and fired in a shot, which was blocked by the courageous Gary Cahill. The deflection, however, took the ball straight up in the air and into the path of the foraging Guerrero, who leapt to head in to the net to an almighty roar from the Brazilians fans behind the goal.

The score remained unchanged until the final whistle. Chelsea, who finished the game with ten men after Cahill saw red, were unable to find a way back despite a late effort from Fernando Torres that was somehow blocked by the legs of the heroic CassioCorinthians scored only two goals here in Japan to become club world champions for 2012 – and both of them were scored by Guerrero, and both with his head. The title is Corinthians’ second world club crown after they picked up the inaugural laurels in 2000.

O Corinthians vence e é bicampeão mundial. Só ele e o Barça.

Bando de loucos no topo do mundo

Bando de loucos no topo do mundo

A loucura agora é mundial.
